We are counting down the Top 10 active NHL players as ranked by our HockeyShot staff. The 2017-2018 NHL Season was the 101st season of operation (100th of play) and saw no shortage of excitement filled games and interesting trades. After welcoming the Las Vegas Knights as the newest expansion team, the Knights went on to face the Washington Capitals in the Stanley Cup Finals. The Capitals ultimately clinched their first cup, and the centennial year of hockey was concluded. Which stars shone the brightest in the 2017-2018 NHL Season? Read our list below for our two-part Top 10 Active NHL Players.

Starting us off at number 10 is Jonathan Toews. A fellow Canadian, Toews was selected by the Chicago Blackhawks with the third overall pick in the 2006 NHL Draft. After only one season with the Blackhawks he was named team captain, becoming the second-youngest captain in NHL history, after Sidney Crosby, at the time. Toews has won the Stanley Cup 3 times along with receiving multiple other awards such as the Conn Smythe Trophy and the Selke Trophy. Coming up in the 2018-2019 NHL Season we here at HockeyShot can’t wait to see Toews work towards the cup once again.

At number 9 we find Steven Stamkos. Stamkos has had a promising career from the beginning, being drafted at No. 1 in the 2008 NHL Draft by the Tampa Bay Lightning. Since then he has become a top goal scorer and was named the 10th Captain of the Lightning in 2014. He is a two-time Maurice Richard Trophy winner as the NHL's leading goal-scorer and one of the biggest scoring threats out there.

Next up we have John Tavares at number 8. After nine seasons with the New York Islanders, who selected him with the No.1 pick in the 2009 NHL Draft, Tavares was recently signed by the Toronto Maple Leafs for a seven-year, $77 million-dollar contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs, his childhood team. Tavares has been playing in the OHL since he was 14, so it is no surprise to see him rise so quickly. We look forward to seeing the skills that Tavares brings to the Leafs in the 2018-2019 NHL Season.

Drafted by the Los Angeles Kings at No. 2 in 2008, Drew Doughty has possibly the best all around game of any defenseman out there, which lands him the number 7 spot on our list. Doughty is a two-time Stanley Cup Champion and won the Norris Trophy for best defenseman in the league in 2016. He is a strong skater and has a buzzing energy that we here at HockeyShot love to see.

At number 6 we have Nikita Kucherov, the first non-Canadian hockey player on our list. Russian born Kucherov was drafted in 2011 by the Tampa Bay Lightning and is another strong player who has perfected his skills to become a threat on the ice. A two-time All-Star in the previous two seasons, Kucherov is only going to keep getting better.
